Chapter II
Student’s Problem in Verb

1.Illogical Sequence
Recognize time sequence in writing and choose verb tenses that logically reflect that sequence. Sometime the chose of the tense clearly effect the meaning
Example:
•Esther worked at the department store for a year

2.When to use Perfect Tense
• Past Perfect tense should be used for the second verb
Example: the car wash stood where the library had been

3.Faulty if clauses
The past perfect tense should also used in a subjunctive past tense “if clause”
Example: If she had though of it , she would have call you

4.Inconsistency in tense
Another common error is illogically mixing tense within entire piece of writing
Example:
•Robertson went into the market, walks over the produce section and picks through the tomatoes (inconsistent tense)
•Robertson went into market, walked over the produce section and picked through the tomatoes (consistent tense)

5.Irregular Verb
Even you understand the correct uses in tenses, you can run into trouble with verb. The major culprit is the large group of irregular verb, which form the past tense and past participle in a variety of ways, not by adding d or ed

Irregular verb cause error simply because people aren’t sure the correct past and participle form
Example:
•I drunk the beer (incorrect)
•I drank the beer (correct)

6.Subject / Verb Agreement
The third person singular s
Example:
•That man live in California (incorrect)
•That man lives in California (correct)

7.Wrong Tense
Example:
•Yesterday I go to the dance (incorrect)
•Yesterday I went to the dance (correct)

8.Passive and non passive expression
Extra “be”
Example:
•What was happened last night? (incorrect)
•What happened last night? (correct)
Omitted “be”
Example:
•I concerned about my grades ( incorrect)
•I am concerned about my grades (correct)

9.Modal usage
Insertion of “to”
Example:
•I had better to go (incorrect)
•I had better go (correct)

10.Non – base after modal
Example:
•I could played basketball (incorrect)
•I could play basketball (correct)

11.Wrong word choice
Example:
•I have met Johanna for five years (incorrect)
•I have known Johanna for five years (correct).

12.Transitive and Intransitive Verb
Transitive and Intransitive Verbs.
Some verbs require an object to complete their meaning. These verbs are called transitive.
Example:
•I received a letter from my uncle.

Some transitive verbs mat take more than one object (direct and indirect objects) at a time. This kind of verbs is called intransitive verbs.
Example:
•The generous man gave some money to the beggar.
•Father bough his son a new bicycle.

Intransitive verb is verb doesn’t required objects
Example :
•The building collapsed
•If hungry, the baby cries

13.Factitive Verb
Factitive Verb is verbs which can take an object followed by a complement to describe or identify the object.
Example :
•Her friends call her “Juragan”
•The faculty elected Mr. Ridwan the new Academic Dean

14.Linking Verb
Linking verb, sometimes called copulas, connect a subject and its complement. Linking verb are often forms of the verb to be, but are sometimes verbs related to the five senses (look, sound, smell, feel, taste). And verb that somehow reflect a state of being (appear, seem, become, grow, turn, prove, remain). What follows the linking verb will be either a noun complement or an adjective complement
Example :
•Those people are all professors.
•This room smells bad

15.Auxiliary Verbs
Auxiliary verbs are used in conjunction with main verbs to express shades of time and mood. The most common auxiliary verb are : to be (is, am, are), to do (do, does, did), and to have (have, has, had). Less common auxiliary verb are : modal (will, shall may, can, could, should, might, must, have to, ought to, used to need)
Example :
•I shall go now
•Thy did write that novel together
